Pahari Mandir is a Shiva temple on a hilltop in Ranchi, about 7 km from Ranchi railway station. The hill stands 350 feet above the surrounding ground, at 2,140 feet above sea level, and Shiva is worshipped here as a linga. Large numbers of devotees come during Sawan and at Shivaratri.
The hill's old name was Tiriburu. Before independence it was held by the British, who hanged freedom fighters here, and it came to be called Hanging Gallows. After 1947 the Ranchi freedom fighter K. C. Das raised the tricolour here in honour of those executed, and since then the national flag has flown beside religious flags every Independence Day and Republic Day; the temple is described as the first in the country to fly it. A stone on the hill bears the message of India's freedom written on the midnight of 14–15 August 1947.
