01 — The story

The story

Jonha Falls, also called Gautamdhara, lies at the edge of the Ranchi plateau, about 38 km from Ranchi. It is a hanging-valley fall: the Gunga River, perched above its parent stream the Radu, spills down about 43 metres to meet it.

The usual way down to the foot of the falls is a flight of 722 steps, though a road via the Jonha Fall Resort avoids the climb. The site has Buddhist associations, and remains from that tradition are found on Gautam Hill. The sons of Baldeo Das Birla built a temple and ashram to the Buddha on the hilltop, and the tourist rest house encloses a shrine with an image of him. A local fair is held at Jonha every Tuesday and Saturday.
