The story

Birsa Zoological Park, officially Birsa Jaivik Udyan, lies near Ormanjhi on the outskirts of Ranchi and covers more than 104 hectares. It takes its name from Bhagwan Birsa Munda, the tribal freedom fighter revered across Jharkhand. About 81 hectares form the zoo proper, while the remaining 23 hectares are a botanical section with uncommon plants and trees.

Animals are housed in roomy enclosures designed to resemble their natural surroundings, and the collection includes lions, tigers, elephants and several kinds of deer, along with a large number of birds and reptiles. Boating on the park's ponds and pony rides are on offer, and there is a children's play area and gift shops. Kanke Dam and Pahari Mandir are among the sights within reach.
