The Jharkhand State Museum in Ranchi opened in 2009 as the main public collection on the history and culture of the state. It gathers archaeological finds, historical artefacts and sculpture to show how the heritage of the region took shape, and it makes a useful first stop for anyone wanting background before travelling further in Jharkhand.
The collection is arranged across seven galleries. Old artefacts and archaeological material sit alongside medieval sculpture, while the Ethnological Gallery is devoted to the tribal communities of Jharkhand, displaying objects from everyday life and explaining the customs and traditions that have shaped these societies over many generations.
