The Jagannath Temple of Ranchi stands on a low hill at Jagannathpur in the Dhurwa area, on the edge of the city, roughly 11 km from the railway station and 6 km from the airport. It was built in 1691 by Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo, ruler of Barkagarh, and is dedicated to Jagannath, the form of Vishnu worshipped at Puri.
The temple's biggest occasion is the annual Rath Yatra, when the deity is carried out on a large chariot and a fair grows up around the procession. Pilgrims arrive from nearby villages and from far afield to watch the chariot being pulled, making it one of the main religious events in the Ranchi calendar.
