The story

McCluskieganj is a small hill town about 60 km from Ranchi that grew up as a settlement for Anglo-Indian families. Because of that community it was once nicknamed the London of the East, though most of its residents left over the decades and only a handful remain today.

The character of the town comes from its roughly 300 bungalows, built in the manner of English country houses. Many stand empty and decaying, but a number have been restored as homestays and guesthouses, which has made the town a popular weekend and day-trip escape from Ranchi for people looking for quiet countryside and old colonial architecture.
