Dhurwa Dam, officially Hatia Dam, stands on the Subarnarekha River in Ranchi. It was completed in 1963 with Russian help and supplies about 9.5 million gallons of drinking water a day, most of it to the city and the rest to Heavy Engineering Corporation. Its reservoir holds about 34.1 million cubic metres, used for homes and irrigation, and it is run by the Jharkhand Urban Infrastructure Development Company.
Besides its role in the city's water supply, the dam draws visitors for its scenery and for recreation. In summer the water level drops considerably, and the state government has proposed linking further sources to meet Ranchi's growing demand.
