01 — The story

The story

Chandoli National Park protects a stretch of the Sahyadri range in western Maharashtra, around the Vasant Sagar reservoir. Its habitats include moist deciduous forest, grassland, rivers and waterfalls, and the wildlife ranges from Bengal tigers and Indian leopards to gaur and sambar, along with a varied bird population.

Visitors go on safari drives, guided nature walks and birdwatching outings, and trekking routes range from easy walks along the reservoir to the climb to Chandoli Fort. Park staff work on habitat protection, reducing conflict between people and wildlife, and community programmes. For longer trips, Koyna Dam and Shivsagar Lake, Vasota Fort inside the Koyna sanctuary and the Thoseghar waterfalls are within reach.
