Tringalwadi Fort sits on a mountain spur in the Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats near Igatpuri, roughly three hours by road from Mumbai. It is generally dated to 1594 CE, under the Nizam Shahi rulers of Ahmednagar, who used it to guard the Thal Ghat, an old trade route linking the Igatpuri area with Nashik.
The fort is roughly four-sided, with semicircular bastions, stout gateways and ramparts now covered in moss. Passages run along its walls, water cisterns survive inside, and there are carvings and Marathi inscriptions as well as rock-cut caves. The approach is a popular trek through forest and valleys past a waterfall, and camping inside the walls is possible with permission. Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary and Trimbakeshwar are within reach.
