01 — The story

The story

Gangapur Dam is an earth-fill dam on the Godavari about 10 km from Nashik. Work began under the British in 1947 and took eighteen years, ending in 1965. Its reservoir is the main source of drinking water for the city, backed by two further dams upstream, and it also supplies the Nashik Thermal Power Station.

The dam played a large part in the growth of farming and industry around Nashik. Its wide sheet of water and green banks also make it a popular local outing, with people coming for picnics, photography and birdwatching, and the views across the reservoir are best after the rains.
