01 — The story

The story

The temple of Saptashrungi Nivasini stands on a hill about 60 km from Nashik, surrounded by the seven peaks that give the goddess and the place their name. It is one of the best-known Devi pilgrimages in Maharashtra, counted among the state's three and a half Shakti Peethas and also listed among the 51 Shakti Peethas of the subcontinent.

Devotees climb a flight of 510 steps to reach the shrine. The image of the goddess is regarded as self-manifested; it is about 8 feet tall and has eighteen arms, each holding a weapon. The long climb is itself treated as an act of devotion, and the hilltop gives wide views over the surrounding ranges.
