01 — The story

The story

Koyna Dam crosses the Koyna River in Satara district and was built in 1963 to generate hydroelectric power and supply water for irrigation. It is backed by the forests of the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary, and its history is unusual: earthquakes in the area have been tied to the filling of its reservoir, and the structure has come through them.

The reservoir, Shivsagar Lake, runs for more than 50 km between wooded hills and is used for boating and picnics. Thoseghar Waterfalls and the Kaas Plateau can be visited nearby, and the hill town of Mahabaleshwar, known for its viewpoints and strawberry farms, holds a strawberry festival each February or March.
