The story

Mayani Bird Sanctuary lies about 71 km from Satara near Vaduj and covers 866.75 hectares spread over six villages: Mayani, Kankatre, Ambavade, Nadval, Yeralwadi and Banpuri. It was set up in the British colonial period and is visited for birdwatching, nature study and quiet outings.

Migrants such as Brahminy ducks, coots and common spoonbills arrive in winter, the best season to visit, and flamingos turn the water pink as they feed. Painted storks and kingfishers are among the residents. The wetland also holds aquatic plants including Ottelia, insects and medicinal herbs, along with dry-land plants such as cacti. Thoseghar Waterfalls and the Nataraj temple at Satara are among nearby sights.
