The Vasantha Vallabharaya Temple stands on a hillock at Vasantapura, south of Bengaluru city, and is dedicated to Vishnu as Vasantha Vallabharaya. It is thought to date from the Chola period, while the sthalapurana credits Rishi Mandavya with building the shrine after finding a self-manifested image of Vallabharaya on this spot.
The same legend says that Bengaluru was once called Kalyanpuri and that Vasantapura was forest where sages meditated. Several holy springs once lay along the path to the temple, said to be where Vallabharaya bathed after marrying Lakshmi at Narayana Vana near Tirupati. Today the road is paved and only two, Devatirtha and Vasantatirtha, remain; others were filled in for building, and the temple's surroundings have been affected by the city's growth.
