The story

Puttenahalli Lake is a small freshwater lake of about 13 acres in JP Nagar 7th Phase, south Bengaluru, fed by rain and surface water channelled into it. Pollution and neglect once turned it into a dump for garbage and sewage, until a citizens' group, the Puttenahalli Neighbourhood Lake Improvement Trust, took on its care, funded mainly by donations from local residents.

The lake is now on the way to full restoration and is popular with birdwatchers: more than 80 resident and migratory species have been seen, among them spot-billed ducks, purple herons, coots, pond herons, garganey and common kingfishers. Trees such as mahogany, kadamba and the badminton-ball tree grow around it. The trust works with the city corporation, which is developing the surrounding park and a jogging track.
