Madiwala Lake in BTM Layout is one of the biggest lakes in Bengaluru, covering 114.3 hectares. Its water was fit to drink until the early 1990s, but industrial waste and sewage have since polluted it. The Karnataka State Forest Department handles its upkeep, there is a children's park by the water, and in 2016 the city's Lake Development Authority granted Rs 25 crore for the lake.
Many migratory birds live here. In November and December large numbers of spot-billed pelicans arrive; they keep together in groups, feed on fish and make short flights across the lake to catch it, and their wings span about 8.5 feet. Egrets can be seen with them.
