The story

Sarakki Lake lies on Puttenahalli main road in the suburb of J. P. Nagar in south Bengaluru and is one of the largest lakes in the city. Its name joins the Kannada words saavira hakki, 'a thousand birds'.

The lake once covered 84 acres, but by 2013 some 34 acres had been taken over by builders and other encroachers. In a case filed by a citizens' water-rights campaign, the Karnataka High Court ordered the land cleared in 2014, and an eviction drive in April 2015 reclaimed land estimated to be worth ₹2,000 crore. The Sarakki Lake Improvement Trust, formed in 2012, works to revive the lake.
