01 — The story

The story

St. Matthias' Church, called the South Bazar Church or Ambala Palli, belongs to the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and stands in Kunnamkulam, Thrissur district. It stands in the heart of the south bazar, between the road to Anjoor on its south and the Guruvayoor road on its east.

The building began as a Hindu temple. In the 18th century, at the request of local Christians, Shakthan Thampuran, the king of Cochin, had it turned into a church. The architectural style of the old temple was kept during the conversion, and this is what gives the church its distinctive appearance today.
