Kattakampal Temple stands in Kattakampal village near Kunnamkulam, Thrissur district, on a small peninsula, in a compound of about two acres. Its main deity is Shiva, facing east, and it is believed to be among Kerala's 108 Shiva temples, with an idol installed by Parashurama; legend puts its age at 2,000 years. The temple is best known, however, for Kattakampal Bhagavathy, who has a separate, west-facing sanctum.
The annual seven-day festival ends on Pooram day in the month of Medam (April–May). Its highlight is the enactment of the battle between Kali and the demon Darika, ending in Darika Vadham, the slaying of Darikasura.
