The story

The Mammiyoor Mahadeva Temple is a Shiva temple in Guruvayur, Thrissur district, and by custom pilgrims to the Guruvayur Temple also visit here. It is one of Kerala's 108 Shiva temples and one of five Shiva temples around Guruvayur, managed by the Malabar Devaswom Board. Shiva is worshipped as Uma Maheshwara, with Parvati at his left, and there is also a shrine to Vishnu.

Legend says Brihaspati and Vayu came to the bank of Rudratheertha, where Shiva was in penance, seeking a place for a Vishnu idol once worshipped by Krishna; Shiva moved to the far side of the lake to make room for it, and the place became Mahimayur, 'place of glory', later Mammiyoor. Ganapathi, Subrahmanya, Ayyappan, Bhadrakali and the serpent deities are among the sub-deities. Three pujas are held daily, Shivaratri and Ashtami Rohini are the main festivals, and only Hindus may enter.
