The story

Cheruvathur Sri Mahadeva Temple lies about 1 km from Kunnamkulam town in Thrissur district. Shiva is worshipped here as Cheruvathurappan, and folklore holds that Parasurama installed the idol, making it one of the 108 Shiva temples of Kerala. Although a village called Cheruvathur exists in Kasaragod district, the temple is near Kunnamkulam, and it is thought that the deity was first at Kasaragod and later moved here.

The east-facing sanctum is circular and roofed in copper. Many legends are told about the temple's origins and help explain its popularity today.
