The story

Sree Perunthatta Siva Temple stands south-west of the Guruvayur temple in Thrissur district and is among the oldest temples of the district. Folklore says Parashurama installed its Shiva idol, and it is one of the 108 Shiva temples of Kerala. The saint Sundaramurthy Nayanar wrote of it, and it was long ruled directly by the Calicut Zamorin, whose palace stands nearby to the west.

The temple was among those destroyed during Tipu's campaign; it is said that devotees took the idol of Guruvayoorappan away to Ambalapuzha just before. Many stone inscriptions survive in the complex, and recent excavations uncovered two 18th-century cannons, evidence of the Zamorin's forces defending against Tipu. The double-storey, tile-roofed rectangular sanctum is in the Kerala style, on about two acres of land, and Ganapathy, Vishnu, Subrahmanya, Durga, Nagaraja and Sastha are also worshipped.
