01 — The story

The story

Sanghol Museum stands at the archaeological site of Sanghol in Fatehgarh Sahib district, on the road between Ludhiana and Chandigarh. Digging here has uncovered remains of the Harappan culture and of later historical periods, which makes Sanghol one of the key sites for the early history of Punjab.

The museum opened on 10 April 1990 and is run by the Punjab Department of Cultural Affairs, Archaeology and Museums to keep and show objects found in the excavations. Its modest galleries hold sculpture, pottery, coins, terracotta figures and other relics that trace the long cultural development of the region. The site is quiet and suits visitors with an interest in archaeology, and it can be combined with Fatehgarh Sahib and the Mughal-era remains of Sirhind nearby.
