01 — The story

The story

The Hussainiwala National Martyrs Memorial lies on the bank of the Sutlej in Ferozepur district, close to the border with Pakistan. It marks the spot where the revolutionaries Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were cremated on 23 March 1931, after they had been hanged in Lahore, and it is among the most moving sites linked with the freedom movement.

The memorial was set up in 1968. Bhagat Singh's mother Vidyavati, who asked to be cremated beside her son, was also cremated here. The site draws its largest crowds on Shaheed Diwas, when people gather to pay tribute, and many visitors time an evening trip to coincide with the daily retreat ceremony at the nearby Hussainiwala border. Ferozepur town, a short drive away, has the Saragarhi Gurdwara and old bazaars.
