01 — The story

The story

Dera Baba Nanak is a small town in Gurdaspur district on the bank of the Ravi, right by the India-Pakistan border, and one of the major Sikh pilgrimage centres of northern India. Guru Nanak is believed to have spent much of his later life in this area, and the town grew up around his memory.

Across the border lies Kartarpur, where the Guru lived out his last years. The corridor built between the two places now lets pilgrims travel to that shrine easily, making Dera Baba Nanak the gateway for the journey. The town itself keeps an unhurried character, with narrow streets and old houses, and it is reached by road from Batala, Gurdaspur and Amritsar.
