01 — The story

The story

Gurudwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib in Fatehgarh Sahib district honours the martyrdom of Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh. In 1704 Wazir Khan, the Mughal governor of Sirhind, had the two boys bricked alive after they refused to give up their faith. The town lies about 250 km from Delhi.

The family had been split up while crossing the Sirsa River, and a servant they trusted betrayed Mata Gujri and the two children to the authorities. The boys held to their beliefs to the end, and their grandmother died soon after hearing of their fate. Within the complex, Gurudwara Bhora Sahib marks the spot of the wall linked with the execution, while the shrines of Shahid Ganj and Burj Mata Gujri stand close by. The main shrine is built of white marble with a gilded dome, and a three-day gathering each year draws thousands of devotees to remember the Sahibzadas and Mata Gujri.
