The story

Sahyadri Tiger Reserve was created in 2008 among the Sahyadri hills of the Western Ghats. It reaches across parts of Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and Ratnagiri districts, with Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary as its northern section and Chandoli National Park as its southern one, and it has recently been pushed out towards Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary. In all it covers about 1,166 sq km, roughly half core and half buffer, under evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forest.

The reserve is dedicated to protecting the Bengal tiger. In May 2018 a camera trap in Chandoli photographed a tiger, the first direct evidence of one in the reserve for eight years. Tigresses have since been brought in from Tadoba Andhari and Pench, and official records now list ten tigers, each known by a name such as Chanda, Tara or Senapati. Leopards also live in the forest.
