The story

Dategad is a small fort about 75 km south of Satara, near the town of Patan, and makes an easy day trip from Satara; from the base village of Tolewadi an easy 45-minute walk reaches the entrance. The Patankars, Deshmukhs of the surrounding district under the Marathas, had charge of it until Captain Grant took it for the British in May 1818.

The fort occupies a high tableland of about 3 acres ringed by a scarp some 30 feet high. A gate leads onto the tableland, and 20 steps climb to the top. There stand 10-foot figures of Hanuman and Ganapati, a Shiva linga carved in laterite beside a well cut 100 feet deep into the rock, and two large water tanks.
