The story

Jangali Jayagad is a fort on a spur of the main Sahyadri ridge in Patan taluka of Satara district. Lying within Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary, it gets few visitors, and it is badly ruined: there is no gate, cistern or cave, only an old well and the remains of a Devi temple. The winding ghat road to Chiplun is visible from the top.

Permission to visit comes from the forest office at Koyananagar, 43 km from Chiplun, and an authorised local guide from Nawja village, 11 km from Koyananagar, must accompany every trek. From Nawja the road towards the tunnel is followed for 3 km before an hour's walk through dense forest, where gaur use the path and the scats, hoofprints and pugmarks of other animals are often seen. Insects, birds and reptiles are plentiful, and leeches and ticks appear in humid weather. The trek fits easily into a day.
