01 — The story

The story

Bhairavgad is a fort on a Sahyadri peak, roughly twenty miles south-west of Patan in Satara district, at an altitude of around 1,000 m. It takes its name from the temple of Bhairav, a form of Shiva, that stands within it.

The Rajas of Panhala built the fort, and the Marathas later used it. James Grant Duff wrote about it in his History of the Mahrattas, and British forces captured it on 23 May 1818.
