01 — The story

The story

Sadqi is a border post on the India-Pakistan frontier in Fazilka district where a retreat ceremony takes place every evening at sunset. It follows the same pattern as the better-known event at Wagah but usually draws smaller crowds, so spectators can watch from closer and in a less hurried setting.

The ceremony is a flag-lowering drill with matched marching, heavy stamping and sharp gestures. The jawans wear crisp uniforms, tall turbans and polished boots, many with large handlebar moustaches, and perform with great force as a show of discipline and national pride. Some onlookers find it fierce and others moving. It is still well attended, so arriving early is advisable to get a good place to stand.
