The story

Asafwala Shaheedon Ki Samadhi is a war memorial in open farmland near Fazilka, close to the border with Pakistan. It was raised with help from the civil administration and the army to honour the Indian soldiers who fell while holding back an enemy advance on the town during the 1971 war, and it explains the part Fazilka played in the country's military history.

The troops fought hard over difficult ground, and although the area was saved, many of them lost their lives. Remembrance ceremonies are held every year, attended by senior officers, veterans, students and townspeople, and the memorial is used to help younger visitors understand what the soldiers gave up to protect the region.
