The story

Rohtang Pass is a high mountain pass on the eastern Pir Panjal range, around 51 km from Manali, at an altitude of 3,978 metres. It connects the green Kullu Valley with the bare, dry terrain of Lahaul and Spiti.

The name is said to come from Persian words meaning a heap of corpses, a reminder of the many travellers who died here in harsh weather and on rough ground when the pass was a trade route. The road up climbs from forested slopes into snow, and the top looks out over snow-covered peaks.
