The Ranbireshwar Temple on Shalimar Road in Jammu was raised in 1883 by the Dogra ruler Maharaja Ranbir Singh and takes its name from him, meaning lord of Ranbir. It is described as the largest Shiva temple in north India. The sanctum is on the upper level, where a statue of the Maharaja, hands joined in prayer, faces the deity, and a large brass Nandi watches over the entrance.
The central lingam, cut from a single black stone, stands 8 feet high. Crystal lingams that the Maharaja brought from Banaras are also enshrined, and galleries display about 125,000 bana lingams from the Narmada set out on stone slabs, along with large images of Ganesha and Kartikeya. The temple is busiest during the month of Sawan and at Maha Shivratri.
