01 — The story

The story

Batote is a town in Udhampur district, set at 1,560 m on a Himalayan plateau in the Shivalik range. Its position on the Jammu–Srinagar highway has long made it a halt for people travelling the route. Pine forest covers the slopes around it, and in winter the whole area lies under snow.

The town is known for its gurudwara, which commemorates Sant Mela Singh and Sant Rocha Singh, two saints held in high regard across Jammu and Kashmir. Large numbers of devotees gather there every year for a celebration in their memory. May to June and September to October are the usual visiting seasons.
