The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel runs for about 9.2 km through the Shivalik hills near Patnitop, linking Chenani and Nashri, and ranks among the longest road tunnels in India. It was finished in 2017 to solve an old problem: heavy winter snow often made the surface road between the two places dangerous. The tunnel is fitted with ventilation and modern safety systems.
It is named after Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the statesman who founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. Besides easing the drive, it lets people and goods move between the Jammu and Kashmir regions in every season, and dhabas and markets near the route serve passing travellers.
