Ramnagar, a town by the Kud River in the middle Himalaya, was once the seat of the old Bandralta State; power there later passed to Maharaja Ranjit Singh and then to Raja Suchet Singh. The fort here is credited to Raja Suchet Singh. A samadhi of the Maharani nearby marks the place where, according to tradition, his wife committed sati.
The fort has high walls with many-sided bastions, and its gateways carry images of Ganesha, Durga and Hanuman. Around a central courtyard are cells and vaulted rooms once used to store cannonballs. A moat encircles the walls, crossed by a narrow bridge on the south-east. The Archaeological Survey of India restored the fort in 1972, and it is a protected monument.
