The story

Poomala Dam is an irrigation dam in Mulankunnathukavu panchayat, Puzhakkal block, Thrissur district, Kerala. A diversion weir was first built in the Poomala valley in 1939, and the reservoir was commissioned in 1968. Built of mud and stone and managed by the Kerala Minor Irrigation Department, the dam stands 94.5 metres above sea level. Another dam, Pathazhakundu, lies to its north and is used only for irrigation.

Poomala was officially declared a tourist centre on 21 March 2010. Visitors can go boating on the reservoir or horse riding, and there is a 600-metre walkway, a community hall for 300 people, and a cafeteria and toilets.
