01 — The story

The story

The Heritage Garden, also called the Shakthan Thampuran Palace Garden, occupies part of the palace complex in the centre of Thrissur. The palace was a residence of the Cochin rulers in the 18th and 19th centuries and was built by Raja Rama Varma, known as Shakthan Thampuran, who ruled from 1790 to 1805. The garden was added to the grounds later and is open to the public without charge.

Lawns, flowerbeds, shade trees and walking paths fill the space, along with a fish pond, sculptures and fountains. Concerts, exhibitions, traditional performances and yoga sessions are held here through the year. Vadakkunnathan Temple and the Thrissur Zoo are close by.
