01 — The story

The story

This archaeological museum was first set up in the Kollengode Palace in 1938 and has since moved to the Shakthan Thampuran Palace in Thrissur. Its holdings include bronze figures of Vettakkorumakan and Vishnumaya and stone images of the Buddha, Mahavishnu and Ganapathi. Further galleries cover coins, weapons and the history of Kochi, with utensils of the King of Kochi and a royal horse carriage.

An archaeological park in the grounds displays Megalithic remains such as menhirs, umbrella stones, burial urns and capstones. The private rooms of Rama Varma Sakthan Thampuran have been kept intact, and the palace gardens contain the tombs of Sakthan Thampuran and Samutiri.
