The story

The Thrissur Zoo and State Museum opened in 1885, when Rama Varma XV was Maharaja of Cochin, and it ranks among the earliest zoos in India. It sits in the middle of Thrissur city. Animals on show include tigers, lions, sloth bears, deer, hippopotamus, camels, crocodiles and lion-tailed macaques. A separate snake park holds cobras, pythons, kraits, vipers and rat snakes, and the bird collection has pink pelicans, emus, hornbills and African grey parrots.

The State Museum on the grounds displays wood carvings, metal sculptures, Kathakali figures, old jewellery and traditional Kerala lamps. The zoo also takes part in breeding and conservation work for threatened species of Kerala and the Western Ghats.
