01 — The story

The story

Kalina's Our Lady of Egypt, in Mumbai, is a Catholic parish church of the Archdiocese of Bombay. A Franciscan missionary founded it in 1606, in the years of Portuguese influence over Bombay, after arriving by way of the Mithi river at the settlement then called Kole Kalyan. It marked 400 years in 2006 and counts among the older churches still standing in the city.

The name recalls the flight into Egypt, the Bible's account of the Holy Family escaping King Herod. Over the centuries the parish has served the Catholics of Kalina and Vakola, and the church came to be closely tied to Mumbai's East Indian Catholic community.
