Sacred Heart Church stands on S. V. Road in Santacruz, Mumbai. Completed in 1936, it is a Grade III heritage structure within the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bombay, with a parish of some 8,000 people.
Its roots lie in a small chapel of about 1850 used by the East Indian villagers of the area, to which a priest from St Andrew's Church in Bandra came every Sunday to say mass. In the early 20th century Catholics from Goa, Mangalore and Kerala moving to Bombay settled in Santacruz, because older Catholic quarters such as Colaba and Byculla were crowded, and the new church was built to serve them.
