01 — The story

The story

Bandra Fort, also called Castella de Aguada, stands at Land's End in the Mumbai suburb of Bandra. The Portuguese put it up in 1640 CE as a lookout to protect their settlement and the approach to Mumbai harbour. Rising about 24 m (79 ft) above the water, it is one of the best spots in the city to watch the sun set over the Arabian Sea.

The fort is built of granite blocks with arched supports in a European manner, and its interior once held stores, barracks, a chapel and the watchtower, with openings for guns aimed at hostile ships. Landscaped gardens appear at each level as the path climbs, a palm-lined promenade with benches runs toward the sea, and the grounds include Staircase Park, used for walks, exercise and meditation. Films such as Dil Chahta Hai and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na have scenes shot here.
