The story

Sanjay Gandhi National Park covers about 103 sq km in the north of Mumbai and is one of the largest protected forests inside any city's limits. It forms a green lung for the metropolis, with lakes, waterfalls and hill views, and its flora and fauna belong to the Western Ghats.

Records list more than 1,300 plant species, 254 kinds of birds, 40 mammals, 78 reptiles and amphibians, and around 150 butterflies. Leopards live here at one of the highest densities known anywhere. Spotted deer, sambar and black-naped hare are common, while porcupines, palm civets, striped hyenas, four-horned antelope and mouse deer are rarer. Rhesus and bonnet macaques and Hanuman langurs are found, and the Indian flying fox is the biggest of 17 bat species.
