The story

The Mahakali Caves, also known as the Kondivite Caves after a nearby village, are a group of Buddhist rock-cut chambers in Andheri East, Mumbai. The name probably comes from the Mahakali hills where they are located, and were cut into black basalt between about the 1st century BCE and the 6th century CE as retreats for monks.

There are 19 caves in two groups: an eastern group of 15, with living cells, verandas, courtyards, a chapel and shrines, and a western group of 4 that includes a dining area. Most cells are plain and small. The exception is the chaitya, the main prayer hall, which has stupas and large carved Buddha figures. Some walls bear inscriptions in Pali. Broken tombstones and a small monument lie between the two groups.
