01 — The story

The story

Gorai Beach lies on the north-western fringe of Mumbai, about 40 km from the city centre. Visitors reach it either by ferry across Manori Creek or by road from Bhayander. Far from the crowds of the city's better-known beaches, it is cleaner and calmer, and is favoured by families and young couples looking for a day out of town.

Palm trees line the sand, and the shore faces west, so sunsets here are a draw for evening walks. Beach shacks, street-food stalls, resorts, cottages and beach houses make longer stays possible, and the area is known for full-moon parties. Activities include water sports, horse and camel rides on the beach, boat trips in the creek and picnics by the sea.
