The story

Holy Cross Church in the Mumbai suburb of Kurla was founded in 1588 by the Jesuits and rebuilt in 1848, and is among the oldest churches in the city. Kurla had been granted to the Jesuits of Goa by King Sebastian of Portugal in 1570, and the church, first called San Salvador, later took the name of the Finding of the Holy Cross. While the British held Bombay it was often threatened by guns on the Sion fort, and it passed to the Marathas in 1739.

The church keeps its feast on 3 May. Since 2015 the East Indian community of Kurla Christian Village has marked it with the Holy Cross Parish Fiesta of float parades, bands, East Indian singing and horse carts. The grounds also hold the Phool Dongri Cross, raised on a hill during the plague of 1689–1702 and moved here in 1958 when land was needed for the airport; its own feast falls on the second Sunday of May.
