Powai Lake is an artificial lake in the Powai valley of suburban Mumbai, created in 1891 by damming a stream that fed the Mithi river and served the old Powai village. It was built to add to Bombay's water supply and named after Framji Kavasji, who had leased the estate. At first it covered about 2.1 square kilometres and was up to 12 metres deep.
The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay lies on its eastern side, with IIM Mumbai, formerly NITIE, close by, and housing complexes and large hotels now line the shore. Pollution has left the water unfit to drink, so it no longer supplies the city, but the lake remains a popular spot for visitors.
