01 — The story

The story

Film City is a large studio complex on the western outskirts of Mumbai, spread over roughly 520 acres next to Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The Maharashtra government set it up in 1977 to give the film industry a full set of shooting facilities in one place, strengthening the city's role as the home of Hindi cinema.

Its mix of indoor studios and outdoor locations, from wooded hills and open grounds to built urban sets, lets crews stage almost any setting, from a rural village to a palace. Over the decades a great many Hindi films have been shot here, and the complex is closely tied to the history of Bollywood.
